Homemade Apple Sauce

001

There is nothing quite like homemade apple sauce. Mildly sweet, softly baked apple goo to spread over everything, or simply eat from a spoon. The secret to the perfect taste is in the additions, which are totally up to you! Naturally sweetened with apple juice, or a rich ginger molasses apple sauce, or the classic cinnamon apple, all are delicious and the only solution is to make many different kinds!

Not only is it fool-proof amazing, but you’ll be kicking yourself with how easy it is to make! I don’t know why I waited so long, seriously why did I wait D: Once your apples are nicely chopped up with the skin still on (for extra flavour), simply toss them in the slow cooker and add in the water or juice, as well as any spices or sweeteners you are using.

002

Put the lid on and crank it to high heat, let that cook and simmer and bubble its sugary splendor while you watch tv, have a quick work out, or make some delicious Ginger Spice Bread to spread onto when it’s done! 😉

After about 2 hours the apples should be soft and ready to be mashed up. You can use a potato masher or a fork if you’re really brave. Once there are fairly well squished, feel free to toss it in a blender for an ultra smooth and creamy apple sauce. Mmmmm. Let cook on high for another couple hours for the sugary spice goodness to concentrate, then prepare for bliss.

Ingredients – Makes 1 1/2 cup

  • 2 cups chopped apples (about 5-6)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbs lemon juice
  • 2 tbs coconut sugar or cane sugar
  • 1 tbs cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves

Directions – Slow cooker method

  1. Add in chopped apples leaving the skin ON but removing the core. Add in all other ingredients and mix. Turn on high heat for 2-3 hours until apples are soft.
  2. Mash apples until smooth, or transfer to a blender to remove all chunks. Put back in the slow cooker for 2 hours without the lid on for a richer, more concentrated butter.

Store in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 3 months, or use a sterilized jar in a hot bath for pantry storage. See directions here.
